The first AWCA KZN Power Tea in partnership with Unilever was held on 25 May 2013 at Unilever Umhlanga with its stunning sea views. The theme for the Power Tea was “Be Bold, Be Fearless, Be You”
Prior to the Power Tea, Ms Nirakasha Sookraj, AWCA KZN committee member, facilitated an interactive mentorship session held at the same premises in the morning with the mentors and mentees of the AWCA Mentorship Programme. It was with evident that Ms Masibonge Mntambo, AWCA KZN committee member, who is also an employee at Unilever, along with her Unilever colleagues, worked tirelessly to ensure that the event preparations of both event sessions were a success.
The main guest speakers of the Power Tea were Ms Ruwayda Ebrahim who is the CFO of Grindrod Trading and ex-Partner at Deloitte, as well as Ms Tumi Frazier who is an international motivational speaker, professional coach and author. They inspired the ladies in an amazing way while Unilever pampered them with a delicious meal and their world renowned products.
The event was kicked off by Ms Sandipa Maharaj, AWCA KZN committee member and programme director of the day who then handed over to Thabang Redman, Chairperson of AWCA KZN to welcome the guests.
Ms Ruwayda Ebrahim spoke very eloquently about her career journey and her personal experiences along the way. She provided the attentive audience with a candid and authentic inspirational account of the bold and fearless steps she took from an early age, to achieve her goals by having the “end in mind” and using the power of visualisation. She also gave practical ways that she has used to keep herself motivated and driven to achieve her dreams, one of which is to let people around you know what your goals are.
Ms Tumi Frazier captured the audience with motivational skills to overcome the factors in their lives that impede their natural ability to see further that the current circumstance and achieve to their full potential. She enchanted the audience with relevant and eye-opening analogies of the power of being bold enough to implement positive change in one’s self and surrounding yourself with people who will support you – challenging the audience to think about “who is holding their ladders and more importantly, whose ladder are they holding”
Ms Thiru Naicker, FD for Foods at Unilever gave a pertinent sponsor’s address which enlightened all in attendance of the company’s vision in terms of transformation and the importance of the relationship with AWCA in achieving this. She also shared on her career journey and on what are the key points to remember as women in business in achieving the elusive work-life balance.
The entertaining raffle draw and auction of prizes - most of which were rounded up by Ms Julaine Balram, AWCA KZN committee member in collaboration with Ms Lucia Mkhize, AWCA administrator - was done by Ms Thuthu Mbhele, AWCA KZN committee member and funds were raised for CSI projects.
An AWCA bursary holder, Ms Nolwazi Ngxongo spoke very confidently about her experience as a bursary student and member of the student chapter at the UKZN Westville campus. She brought front of mind the reality of the importance of supporting organisations such as AWCA, as there is direct and real impact on people’s lives when there is a support structure that improves one’s chances of reaching their dreams as an aspirant Chartered Accountant.
Ms Gugu Ngema, AWCA KZN committee member, gave a hearty vote of thanks to all, highlighting all the key contributors to the success of the event. The event was closed with dessert and networking.
